Set in the Greek city-state of Priene in 650 BCE, this fascinating murder mystery opens with Bias, a minor priest of Poseidon, being stalked by a murderer at the sacred grounds of the PanIonian, the religious and political center of the Ionic League.
As Bias crouches at the back of the cave, he recalls the events at the previous weeks which would lead him to his predicament.
While assisting at the opening of the PanIonic games by securing the blessing of Poseidon, Priene’s best athlete is poisoned and dies in Bias’ arms. The citizens perceive Bias to be infected by “the miasma of death” and he is challenged with the responsibility of finding the killer.
As the games progress, Bias is in the unenviable position of having to interrogate some very influential people and their families. The magistrates, athletes, and Aristocrats grow increasingly impatient with his murder investigation. When another favorite athlete is killed in a chariot race, the pressure on bias intensifies. Was it an accident? The athlete’s uncle doesn’t think so.
Bias has set the trap for the murderer on the sacred grounds of the PanIonian. Will he find a solution to these crimes in the darkness of the cave where the action began?

However, their plans are thwarted when a young Lydian man is found dead on the first day of the festival. In ancient Ionia, the Greek city-states have no police force. The family must deal with the matter. But, as the Lydians have no rights in Greek Priene, the lesser priest of Poseidon Holikonios, Bias, once again, is conscripted to solve the murder!

During his quest, Bias runs up against Thrasybulus, the mighty tyrant of great Miletus, makes friends with the early scientist, Thales, and is bewitched by a beautiful, young widow. In the end,the investigator races against time to prevent a horrible blasphemy that could tear the League apart!

Bias of Priene, the detective hero of ancient Greek Ionia, is at it again, in this fourth adventure!
Bias, the minor priest of the Panionian temple of Poseidon in Priene, is sent with his boss, the major priest Chrystheus, by the city fathers of Priene to try and head off a coming war with the city-state of Samos, which lusts after the rich farmland of the plain of Mycale. What he doesn’t expect to step into (but he probably should be by now), is to be thrust into an atmosphere of murder, piracy, and sword-and-shield combat!
The island of Samos is the capital of piracy in the Aegean Sea, and although a legitimate member of the Ionian League, is ruled by a merciless gaggle of aristocrats called the Geomoroi, who know that their city-state must prey on the ships of other seagoing nations (including her sister states of the Ionian League) in order to be prosperous and rich. But it is also the site of the legendary Heraeum, a magnificent temple dedicated to Hera, the wife of Zeus, and her bloodthirsty son, Ares, the god of war.
When a horrific murder is enacted upon the very steps of this most sacred of temples, it is up to Bias to solve the crime and to prevent a horrendous conflict between his beloved Priene and pirate-infested Samos. Can he do it, or will this be his swan song? And what of the beautiful and lustful Ossadia, waiting backing home to welcome or reject him?
