If You Build It…

With the arrival of spring, warmer weather, and hatching of eggs, it was time to replenish my chicken flock. While I am still salty at the devastation that was waged upon my chickens of the new year, I am excited and hopeful about this new flock.

My husband, The Engineer, decided that the chickens needed a better setup than the sad one I had for them. This was surprising, because he hates my chickens. I am not sure what prompted The Engineer to decide my lone, last chicken needed a new coop, and I didn’t ask. No need to look a gift bird in the beak. So I went online and found some plans for a coop I liked.

I am not an architect, because once we printed out these plans, I could not make heads nor tails of them. The Engineer said they weren’t very good plans, so I am going to go with that and not my own ineptitude.

We decided to put the new coop in a different spot than the old one. We chose a flat part of the yard and I raked out about five years of leaves and a compost pile to clear the area.

But I did it! And over about four weekends, we built this!

Big Mama took to it right away. She had no problem going into the hen house portion of the coop, though she does not like laying eggs in the laying boxes. But I am tremendously grateful for my daily egg, even if it is laid in the middle of the hen house.
